Power Moment
Imagine yourself standing in the front yard of a house, the birds chirping, hills and woods all around you. After the long winter, it’s finally sunny and warm, but the ground and the light breeze are still quite cold. In front of you is a basket of freshly washed laundry steaming in the cool air. You hang large tablecloths and bed linens on the long line. As you walk along the sheets, which are moving lightly in the wind, you come between the linen into the full sun and squint because it blinds you. And yet the warmth is so pleasant and intense that you stop for a long moment.
The sun hits your body and you gratefully soak in the sudden warmth. You realize how good the warmth feels, that it warms you to the core and fills you completely. Your tense shoulders relax, you breathe out, unwind and become very calm within. You continue to keep your eyes closed, wanting to savor this moment. Pleasure!
Do you know moments like this? Even if you don’t hang up your laundry in such an idyllic way, maybe you know these beautiful, special moments where you can just let go. Such moments also happen when reading the Bible, praying, being still before God, singing, running outside, a magnificent sunrise or in everyday life, when someone has exactly the words for me that I need at that moment, when observing loving interaction between people….
The same happens when suddenly the awareness hits me: I am not alone, God is with me!
The picture of hanging up the laundry works on the physical level, which affects my feelings. I can experience the same thing with God on the spiritual level, which then affects my body. God’s words have power! Whether I read these words in the Bible or receive them in my mind during prayer does not matter.
God’s word is living and active. It is sharper than any two-edged sword and cuts as deep as the place where soul and spirit meet, the place where joints and marrow meet. God’s word judges a person’s thoughts and intentions. Hebrews 4:12
God’s word has power! They transform! They are like that powerful, intense ray of sunshine that hits me and warms me deep inside. In contrast to the sun, I can come to God at any time and “pick up” warm rays of love and appreciation. I may close my eyes and absorb his power and love, let it fill me.
Does that sound a little bit out of the ordinary or a little bit weird? Maybe, but it doesn’t change the fact that it gives power like nothing else to belong to God and to be filled with his love. It is the same power that resurrected Jesus! There is no power that’s stronger.
Glory belongs to God, whose power is at work in us. By this power he can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine.
Ephesians 3:20
Have faith in God, admire him and let him fill you with his power and love as if with a ray of sunshine. Let God’s words flood into your life. No one can encourage and give you peace better than he can!
